About Africanized Honey Bees
Africanized honey bees are honey bees. They are not a separate insect, and most people cannot identify them by sight. The public-safety concern is colony behavior: some colonies with Africanized genetics may react faster, send more bees, pursue farther, and continue defending longer when disturbed.
Save the Right Bees
Honey Bee Awareness is not anti-bee and not anti-beekeeper. The goal is to protect people, pets, livestock, outdoor workers, first responders, and responsible managed honey bees by helping communities recognize the difference between manageable colonies and colonies that create a public-safety risk.
Managed bees should be manageable. Repeated or extreme defensive behavior should not be ignored, excused, or treated as normal when it occurs near homes, schools, parks, work crews, livestock, pets, or public spaces.
What Are Africanized Honey Bees?
Africanized honey bees are hybrids within the western honey bee species, Apis mellifera. They developed after African honey bee genetics were introduced into South America and then spread north through swarming, reproduction, and interbreeding with other honey bee populations.
Africanized honey bees were first detected in the United States in South Texas in 1990. Since then, Africanized genetics have been documented, reported, or discussed across multiple southern and southwestern states.

Africanized Honey Bee Biology
Dr. Juliana Rangel is a professor of apiculture in the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University. Her research includes honey bee reproductive biology, the behavioral ecology and population genetics of unmanaged honey bees, and environmental factors affecting honey bee health.
In this National Honey Show presentation, Dr. Rangel explains the origin, spread, biology, and behavior of Africanized honey bees. The lecture provides valuable scientific background for understanding why colony behavior—not appearance alone—is central to public safety.

They Cannot Be Identified by Sight
To a homeowner, mower, ranch worker, teacher, firefighter, animal owner, or new beekeeper, Africanized honey bees and European-derived honey bees generally look the same. Do not assume a colony is safe because the bees look ordinary.
Behavior, location, history, testing, and source documentation matter. Honey Bee Awareness records bee identification separately from incident severity whenever possible because a serious attack is not the same thing as a confirmed Africanized-bee identification.
Why Behavior Matters
Any honey bee colony can defend itself. The concern in Africanized regions is that some colonies may respond more intensely when disturbed, especially if the colony is hidden where people do not recognize the nest site.
Serious incidents often begin when people or animals disturb bees they did not know were established nearby. Colonies may be inside walls, meter boxes, tree cavities, sheds, rooflines, irrigation boxes, tires, brush piles, abandoned equipment, water fountains, or other protected spaces.
Common disturbance triggers include:
- Mowing, weed trimming, brush clearing, and landscaping
- Tree trimming, chainsaw work, roof work, gutter work, and construction vibration
- Tractors, ranch equipment, utility work, and other vibration near a hidden colony
- Livestock, pets, children, workers, or homeowners moving close to a nest site
- Attempts to spray, seal, smoke, disturb, or move a colony without proper knowledge or protection
- Public-access locations where no one realizes bees are established nearby
Managed Bees, Feral Colonies, and Genetics
A managed beehive is not the same thing as an unmanaged feral colony in a wall, tree, shed, meter box, or structure. Responsible beekeepers select for workable behavior, monitor colonies, replace queens when needed, and avoid using highly defensive colonies for breeding.
Managed colonies can still become a problem if genetics, placement, neglect, queen status, or poor handling create repeated defensive incidents near people or animals. Calling a colony “managed” does not automatically make it safe.
Genetics matter. Queen mating, drone populations, unmanaged colonies, and regional Africanized genetics can influence the behavior of future workers. Honey Bee Awareness supports public-safety education, accurate incident documentation, responsible beekeeping, and long-term research into inherited defensive behavior.
About Africanized Bee Maps
Many Africanized honey bee maps show where Africanized bees were first detected or reported by county, region, or year. Those maps can be useful historical records, but they should not be treated as complete current risk maps.
A map may show when Africanized honey bees were first detected in a county. It may not show current colony density, testing coverage, local management conditions, or whether every part of that county has the same present-day risk. Some public maps also stopped receiving updates years ago.
Honey Bee Awareness may eventually build updated regional summaries as incident records, source documentation, and reviewed data improve. Until then, maps should be treated as historical and educational tools, not guarantees of where highly defensive colonies are or are not present.
What This Means for the Public
The practical message is simple: do not disturb unknown colonies, take repeated or extreme defensive behavior seriously, and leave immediately if bees begin attacking.
If bees attack, protect your face and head, keep moving away from the colony, and get inside a building or sealed vehicle if possible. Call emergency services when people are in danger. Do not stand still, swat in place, return to the nest area, or attempt to fight the bees without protective equipment and proper help.
Water should not be treated as a planned escape method. People can drown, become trapped, or be attacked again when they surface. The safer goal is distance and shelter.
What This Means for Beekeepers
Honey Bee Awareness supports responsible beekeeping. It also supports honest evaluation of colony behavior. A colony that repeatedly creates dangerous defensive incidents near people, animals, workers, or public spaces should not be dismissed as “just bees.”
Good bees are worth protecting. Highly defensive behavior should not be normalized, bred forward, or allowed to become someone else’s public-safety problem.
