Truth and Consequences
Part Four connects honey bee movement, commercial pollination, reproduction away from home, swarming, public safety, aggressive genetics, and the real consequences for families, animals, workers, responders, agriculture, and communities.
This is not a warning about a distant possibility. Other regions of the Americas are already living with the operational, public-safety, and genetic consequences of highly Africanized honey bee populations.

What Do We Mean by “Not Sustainable”?
We do not mean that honey bees will disappear or that beekeeping will become impossible everywhere. We mean that a system which tolerates dangerously defensive colonies while shifting the risks and costs onto neighbors, workers, responders, veterinarians, livestock owners, and responsible beekeepers cannot continue indefinitely without consequences.
When temperament is treated as unimportant, defensive colonies reproduce, drones influence open mating, unmanaged swarms spread, serious incidents go unrecorded, and each new generation of beekeepers becomes more likely to accept behavior that earlier generations worked to prevent.
Nicaragua: A Documented Warning
A 2022 peer-reviewed study sampled 146 managed colonies in 26 apiaries across three regions of Nicaragua. The researchers found a high degree of Africanization and reported that three-quarters of the colonies showed a defensive tendency.
Highly defensive colonies with massive attacks during handling and strong pursuit.
Moderately defensive colonies requiring special management to avoid problems.
Gentle colonies described as manageable without defensive problems.
Highly defensive colonies in that study pursued people from 30 meters to more than 100 meters, with some recorded pursuits extending as far as 400 meters. The study also found heavy reliance on feral swarms and self-reared queens, with only a small share of replacement queens coming from specialized breeding. The authors reported that Nicaragua did not have a queen-rearing program capable of supplying broadly selected stock to beekeepers.
Daniel Rodriguez — Nicaragua
Daniel, a Nicaraguan beekeeper and member of our team, has described apiaries placed in fenced or isolated wooded areas, work scheduled around defensive conditions, and dangerous unmanaged colonies handled after dark when the bees have returned to the nest.
He has also described the effort required to make captured colonies more manageable over time. His experience is a personal field account, not a claim that every beekeeper or every colony in Nicaragua is the same.
Brazil: Where Africanization Began in the Americas
African honey bees were introduced into Brazil during the 1950s. After queens escaped, African-derived populations spread through South America, Central America, Mexico, and into parts of the United States. Brazilian beekeepers adapted, but adaptation came with substantial changes in location, protective equipment, handling practices, breeding, and public awareness.
A Brazilian field study found the tested colonies to be highly defensive, with responses varying by season and time of day. It also reported that high defensiveness was not positively linked to honey productivity, supporting the practical possibility of selecting bees for lower defensiveness without surrendering productive performance.
Rebecca — Hawaiian Queen Company
Rebecca, a Hawaiian queen breeder, told Gary that she and her husband visited Brazil and saw how difficult defensive conditions made ordinary bee work. She described beekeepers whose work had to be pushed into restricted hours, including nighttime handling, because working colonies under ordinary daytime conditions had become too difficult.
At the operations she visited, beekeepers used donkeys rather than trucks to reach the bees and transport honey or equipment. Rebecca described extra-padded, quilted protective suits made for the donkeys so the animals would not be overwhelmed by stings while accompanying the beekeepers.
This is Rebecca’s firsthand observation from the operations she visited. It should not be presented as a claim that every Brazilian beekeeper works only at night or uses donkeys. However, independent reporting has documented at least one Brazilian beekeeper in Itatira, Ceará, who uses a donkey named Boneco to transport harvested honey and fitted him with a custom protective beekeeping suit.
The Consequences We Can Still Prevent
Ordinary Work Becomes Dangerous
Mowing, tree work, fence repair, animal care, utility work, and emergency response can become triggers for mass defensive attacks.
Beekeeping Becomes Harder
More distance, heavier protection, restricted working hours, larger safety zones, and additional labor become routine costs.
Gentle Genetics Become Harder to Hold
Unselected queens, unmanaged swarms, and local drone pressure can make predictable, manageable stock increasingly difficult to maintain.
The Public Pays the Difference
Families, animal owners, medical providers, veterinarians, fire departments, law enforcement, and property owners absorb the consequences.
Trust in Beekeeping Erodes
When serious behavior is defended or dismissed, communities become less willing to tolerate even responsible managed colonies.
The Abnormal Becomes Normal
New beekeepers may never be shown that productive honey bees can also be calm, workable, and appropriate for populated communities.
This Is About Behavior, Not a Label
African ancestry does not make every colony equally defensive, and European-derived colonies can also become dangerously defensive. Research has documented Africanized populations selected toward gentleness. The practical target is the behavior that places people and animals at unacceptable risk.
The choice is not “bees or people.” The choice is whether we preserve and improve productive, manageable honey bees—or continue rewarding behavior that makes responsible beekeeping harder to defend.
A Different Direction Is Possible
Select for Manageable Temperament
Temperament should be treated as a production and public-safety trait, not an inconvenience to be excused.
Replace Dangerous Queens
Requeening with selected stock can redirect a managed colony instead of allowing highly defensive genetics to reproduce unchecked.
Document Serious Incidents
Reliable incident records reveal patterns that isolated stories and short news cycles cannot show.
Support Regional Queen Programs
Beekeepers need practical access to productive, tested, manageable queens suited to their climate and industry.
Keep Risk Away from the Public
Colony placement, inspection, removal, bee-proofing, and responsible response standards all reduce preventable exposure.
Invest in Research Before Crisis
Behavior, mating, genetics, incident patterns, and field management should be studied before the costs become unavoidable.
We do not have to wait until extreme defensive behavior determines when, where, and whether ordinary people can safely live and work around honey bees.
