Words matter. In bee-related public-safety incidents, terms like swarm, hive, colony, nest, feral, managed, defensive, aggressive, and Africanized are often used loosely or incorrectly.
This glossary explains common bee terms in plain language so homeowners, workers, reporters, public officials, responders, and new beekeepers can better understand what they are seeing, what may be living in a hidden cavity, and what kind of risk may be involved.
Why These Terms Matter
A swarm is not the same thing as an established colony. A hive is not the same thing as the living colony. A managed colony is not the same thing as a feral colony. A small entrance hole may lead to a much larger nest cavity. Clear language helps people make better decisions before someone, an animal, or a responder gets hurt.
Africanized Honey Bee
An Africanized honey bee is a honey bee with Africanized genetics. Africanized bees can look like other honey bees, but colonies with Africanized traits may show stronger defensive behavior, faster response to disturbance, greater pursuit distance, and higher risk to people and animals when a colony is disturbed.
Africanized does not mean every bee is dangerous every moment. It means the genetics and behavior of the colony may create a higher public-safety concern, especially around people, pets, livestock, workers, schools, and public spaces.
European Honey Bee
European honey bees are the primary managed honey bees traditionally used in U.S. beekeeping. Many managed colonies are selected for gentleness, productivity, disease resistance, and manageability.
The goal of HoneyBeeAwareness.org is not to harm honey bees. The goal is to help preserve gentle, manageable honey bees while recognizing and reducing risks from highly defensive colonies.
Managed Colony
A managed colony is a honey bee colony kept by a beekeeper in hive equipment and actively monitored or maintained.
A managed colony should be reasonably manageable. If a managed colony becomes extremely defensive, repeatedly stings people or animals, or creates a public-safety concern, it should not be dismissed as normal.
Feral Colony
A feral colony is a honey bee colony living outside active beekeeper management. Feral colonies may live in tree cavities, walls, sheds, meter boxes, irrigation boxes, old tires, RVs, campers, boats, barbecue pits, grills, compost bins, equipment compartments, barns, water fountains, stacked materials, or other protected spaces.
Feral does not automatically mean Africanized. But in regions where Africanized genetics are established or suspected, unmanaged colonies deserve caution.
Swarm
A swarm is a temporary group of honey bees traveling with a queen while looking for a new home. A swarm often appears as a cluster of bees hanging from a branch, fence, structure, or other surface.
A typical swarm is usually not defending brood or stored honey because it has not yet established a nest. However, people should still keep their distance and avoid disturbing it.
Important: many news reports use “swarm” to describe any large group of bees, even when the situation actually involves an established colony defending a nest.
Colony
A colony is the living family of bees: queen, workers, drones, brood, and the organized social unit.
A colony can live in beekeeper equipment, a tree, a wall, a shed, a meter box, or another cavity. The colony is the living group of bees, not the box or structure itself.
Hive
A hive is the structure or cavity where a colony lives. A hive may be beekeeper equipment, such as wooden hive boxes, or it may be an unwanted nesting site in a wall, tree, shed, water meter, irrigation box, tire, or other cavity.
In everyday language, many people say “hive” when they mean the bees themselves. More precisely, the hive is the home or structure; the colony is the living group.
Nest
The nest is the comb, brood, stored honey, pollen, and organized living area inside the hive or cavity. A colony defending an established nest can be a very different safety situation from a swarm that is temporarily resting while searching for a home.
Nest Site / Cavity
The nest site is the protected space where a colony builds comb. The outside entrance may be only a small crack, hole, pipe opening, cord opening, vent, or gap, but the space behind it may be much larger.
A useful public comparison is size. A colony may use a cavity roughly the size of a few basketballs, a shipping box, an ice chest, an equipment compartment, a wall space, or something even larger. People should not judge risk by the size of the entrance hole alone.
Comb
Comb is the wax structure built by honey bees. It contains cells used for brood, honey, and pollen.
Leftover comb and honey after a removal can attract bees, ants, rodents, moths, and other pests. It may also attract future bee colonies if the cavity is not cleaned and sealed.
Brood
Brood means developing young bees: eggs, larvae, and pupae. A colony with brood may defend its nest more strongly than a temporary swarm, because the colony is protecting its young and resources.
Queen
The queen is the primary reproductive female in a honey bee colony. A colony’s genetics and behavior are strongly influenced by the queen and the drones she mated with.
Replacing a queen is one way beekeepers may attempt to improve colony temperament, although results depend on the colony, timing, genetics, and management.
Worker Bees
Worker bees are female bees that perform most colony tasks, including foraging, feeding brood, building comb, guarding, and defending the colony. Most stings during a defensive incident come from worker bees.
Drone
A drone is a male honey bee. Drones do not sting. Their primary role is reproduction. Drone genetics matter because queens mate with drones, and those matings influence the genetics and behavior of future colonies.
Defensive Behavior
Defensive behavior is a colony’s natural response to a perceived threat. Honey bees may defend the entrance, brood, comb, honey, queen, or nesting site.
Some defensiveness is normal in honey bees. The concern is extreme or repeated defensive behavior that creates danger for people, animals, workers, or responders.
Aggressive Behavior
In public language, “aggressive bees” usually means bees that respond strongly, pursue people or animals, sting repeatedly, or create a safety hazard.
HoneyBeeAwareness.org generally favors the term “highly defensive” when describing colony behavior, because bees are usually responding to a perceived threat. However, the public phrase “aggressive bees” is widely understood and may appear in incident reports, news stories, and safety discussions.
Highly Defensive Colony
A highly defensive colony is a colony that responds with unusually intense defensive behavior, especially when disturbed by mowing, weed-eating, small gasoline engines, chainsaws, tractors, animals, foot traffic, vibration, weather, or activity near the nest.
Highly defensive colonies near people, animals, homes, schools, public spaces, or work areas deserve serious attention. Sometimes there is no obvious single trigger; the colony may respond as if ordinary nearby activity is a threat to the nest.
Attack
A bee attack is a serious defensive incident where bees pursue, sting, or overwhelm a person or animal. Most honey bee encounters are not attacks. The term should be used carefully, but it is appropriate when a person or animal is repeatedly stung, pursued, injured, hospitalized, killed, or placed at serious risk.
Absconding
Absconding occurs when a colony leaves its nest completely. This is different from swarming. A swarm is usually reproduction: part of the colony leaves with a queen while the original colony may remain behind. Absconding is abandonment: the colony leaves the nesting site.
Requeening
Requeening means replacing a colony’s queen with another queen. Beekeepers may requeen to improve temperament, productivity, health, or genetics. In public-safety situations, requeening may not be appropriate if the colony is already creating immediate risk near people, animals, or public spaces.
Removal
Removal means taking bees, comb, and nest material out of a location. Proper removal may involve opening a wall, tree section, shed, meter box, or other cavity. The goal is not just to collect bees, but to address the nest material that may attract future problems.
Exclusion
Exclusion means sealing openings or correcting conditions so bees cannot re-enter a structure or cavity. Removal without exclusion may allow bees to return or allow another colony to move in later.
Public-Safety Incident
A public-safety incident is a bee-related situation that creates a risk to people, pets, livestock, workers, responders, schools, parks, roads, neighborhoods, or public spaces.
A public-safety incident may or may not involve stings. For example, a swarm near a school playground may be a public-safety concern even if nobody is injured.
Source Strength
HoneyBeeAwareness.org tracks source strength when organizing incident reports. A stronger source may include official reports, government records, established news reports quoting officials, direct witness accounts, photos, video, medical information, veterinary information, or responder documentation.
Unverified leads may still be useful, but they should be clearly labeled until more information is available.
Bee ID Status
Bee ID status describes whether the bees involved in an incident were confirmed, reported, suspected, or unknown.

This distinction matters because public safety, scientific discussion, and media reporting should not treat every bee incident as genetically confirmed unless evidence supports it.
