Honey Bee Awareness is building a public record of serious bee-related incidents, field observations, safety lessons, terminology problems, and research references related to highly defensive honey bee behavior and Africanized honey bee genetics.
The purpose is not to create fear of honey bees. The purpose is to document real events carefully, separate confirmed information from reported claims, and support responsible discussion about public safety, managed honey bees, and long-term research needs.

Save the Right Bees
Honey bees are valuable pollinators and managed livestock. Gentle, manageable colonies are worth preserving. Responsible beekeeping, good genetics, sound management, and clear public education all matter.
At the same time, repeated or extreme defensive behavior around homes, workers, schools, parks, livestock, pets, responders, or public spaces should not be dismissed as normal. Managed bees should be manageable. Highly defensive colonies deserve serious attention.
What This Project Is Studying First
The first research layer is documentation. HBA is organizing serious incidents involving human injury, hospitalization, fatalities, animal losses, worker exposure, responder involvement, public locations, and recurring triggers such as mowing, weed-eating, chainsaws, brush clearing, tractors, tree work, and hidden colonies in structures or equipment.
These records are not all equal. Some are official reports. Some are established news reports quoting officials. Some are first-person field reports. Some are unverified leads that need follow-up. HBA tracks source strength so weak reports are not treated the same as well-documented cases. The methodology page explains how incident records are sourced, classified, reviewed, and labeled.
As the database grows, it may help identify useful patterns: common triggers, high-risk locations, seasonal trends, animal impacts, outdoor-worker risk, responder exposure, and gaps in public awareness.
Field Observations and Public Understanding
Research is not limited to old news articles. Repeated field observations, customer conversations, incident reports, and beekeeper experience can show where people misunderstand risk.
Examples include confusing a swarm with an established colony, assuming managed hives prevent feral colonies from moving in, believing Africanized bees disappeared, or treating aggressive behavior as normal beekeeping. Those misunderstandings can affect how people respond before an incident happens.
Long-Term Questions and Research Boundaries
Some questions may require genetic, reproductive, behavioral, or molecular-level research. HBA is interested in credible work related to inherited defensive behavior, Africanized honey bee genetics, queen mating, drone contribution, hybridization, colony temperament, and practical ways to preserve manageable honey bees while reducing public-safety risk.
These subjects remain research questions unless qualified scientists, proper review, and reliable evidence support stronger conclusions. HBA does not present preliminary genetic or biological ideas as proven treatments, field recommendations, or current control methods. Researchers and Collaborators
HBA welcomes serious input from qualified researchers, university programs, extension personnel, field biologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, experienced commercial beekeepers, public-safety professionals, veterinarians, medical professionals, and others with relevant expertise.
Useful contributions may include peer-reviewed research, official records, incident documentation, field observations, technical review, historical context, responder experience, or help identifying questions that deserve better data.

This page describes research direction and documentation priorities. It does not provide pesticide instructions, genetic treatment instructions, medical advice, or emergency-response procedures. Public safety guidance is handled separately in the Safety Guide and Bee Attack Safety pages.
Any future biological, genetic, molecular, or field-level research concepts should be evaluated by qualified professionals and handled through proper scientific, regulatory, ethical, and safety review.
